But I am definitely excited for this Friday! Some of my friends are having a wedding party, complete with cake, champagne, and (possibly) large hats, and you can be sure I will have opinions next Tuesday. In the meantime, let's look at some pretty dresses. Here are a few royal brides, both of recent and vintage varieties (and I am sure I am missing some good ones, but these are the ones I have pics of that are ready to go!). Which are your favorites? What do you predict for Kate's dress? Which tiara will she wear? Do you have your wedding party planned?

Ah, and I do believe you ended on Grace Kelly, no? We were just talking about her yesterday, how beautiful she was, how hard Rainier mourned for her when she passed. Truly, their wedding photos are by far my favorite among all the royals. Great post!! :)
ReplyDeleteAlyssia, her gown is one of my all-time favorites! She was so very beautiful...
ReplyDeleteI remember loving--LOVING--Diana's dress at the time. What were we THINKING in the 80's?
ReplyDeleteI loved Princess Maxima's dress and Princess Grace's. I will be getting up in the wee hours of the morning on Friday to watch the wedding. Hard to believe that 30 years ago I was actually in London when Charles and Diana were married. The day after the wedding, we went up to Edinburgh and a copy of her dress was already in the window of a department store!
ReplyDeleteLOL Elizabeth--I was just reading an article about how wedding gown designers are even now trying to make educated guesses about what Kate's dress will look like so they can get started on a copy first thing Friday. I can't WAIT to see it. (and what was it like in London for Diana's wedding???)
ReplyDeleteSusanna, I was a preschooler when Diana got married and was obsessed with the whole princess-bride idea. I thought her dress was exactly what a wedding gown ought to be then--now I just wonder how she could stand dragging all that fabric around all day. :)
I love the dresses in the 3rd from the bottom photo -- whose wedding is it? The lacing up the back of the dresses is such a simple yet elegant decorative touch, and their hair styles are also classic and gorgeous.
ReplyDeleteIt's not shown here, but I seem to remember that Anne Hathaway wore a wedding gown in one of the Princess Diaries movies that was copied from a royal wedding. Which princess was it? I loved that one too.
Perhaps we should have known that Princess Diana was too young to get married just by looking at her dress (too late by then, of course). At 19 she fell into the "more is better" trap young girls often fall into, but as she got older her taste became more sophisticated and she developed into an incredible fashion icon.
LOL Susan/DC! I dunno--I was at a wedding a couple weeks ago with a 40something bride who had the biggest gown I've ever seen in real life...
ReplyDeleteAnd that pic is Lady Sarah Armstrong-Jones, Princess Margaret's daughter, and I LOVE her gown and her bridesmaids' dresses. They are so pretty and romantic while also being elegant and classic.
To me, Diana's wedding dress is very much of its era. At the time (I was in 6th grade) I loved it. Now? That dress is wearing HER, not the other way around, and that's never a good sign.
ReplyDeleteI was in college in the late 70's and early 80's. Got married in '82 and while my dress did have a cathedral length train the rest of it was fairly tame.
ReplyDeleteGrace Kelly's dress is my favorite.
I am off work on Friday so I will definitely figure out a way to watch the wedding. Looking forward to it and especially looking forward to seeing Kate's dress!
